Burlap and Birds

 I found this interesting bird picture/ art piece at the thrift store.  It was very heavy and made of interesting materials.  I took it apart and painted the bird sculpture part  and the frame white and then sanded it a little.  I covered the base with a sheet of cork and then covered it with burlap before reattaching the frame.  I used it for a jewelry display board at a craft show and have it my dining room for now.  Now it is a little Shabby Chic.

Creating : A New Fall Wreath- Burlap Style

My Burlap Wreath

I have seen many burlap Wreath Creations lately.  There seems to be many instructions out there for them as well.  I came up with this wreath to decorate my front door this Fall.   The embellishments are pieces of my old fall wreath, a vintage scarf, a wooden bird I found at the thrift store and a gold flower brooch that I made out of satin.   I  created the wreath by starting with a 16 inch foam base and covered it in scraps of white cotton fabric cut into wide strips by just wrapping it around the base.  I then cut burlap material into 6 inch squares and pinned the folded up squares randomly around the base until it was covered. I used hot glue to attach the embellishments.

Super Easy to make Christmas Ornament:

Vintage Christmas Bulbs

Elmer's Glue

Sponge Brushes

Fine Glitter

Pipe Cleaners- cut in half

Hot Glue

Beads or ribbon...

Directions:
I like to make the hanger first so the bulb can dry hanging up.

To make the hanger, take a half of a pipe cleaner and wrap one end around the metal part of the bulb. Hot glue the pipe cleaner in place. Now, bend pipe cleaner in a shape that makes a loop. Attach beads and then hot glue the pipe cleaner in place.

Paint a thin layer of glue on bulb. Sprinkle with fine glitter- let Dry.

Add Ribbon or other embellishments to your ornament.

Sewing heated neck pillows

Perfect for winter comfort. These herbal neck pillows smell great when heated and feel so nice and cozy. I saw some similar ones sold at whole foods this weekend for $40. These were easy and quick to make and can be made for a few dollars.


- Fabric (12" x 34" piece for each pillow)
- Rice (approx. 48 oz.)
- flax seed
- dried chamomile flowers
- dried mint leaves
- Lavender
- a few drops essential oil
- Coordinating thread for sewing

Mix rice and desired herbs together and sprinkle with essential oil. I used approximately 8 cups of this mixture to fill one neck pillow
Place fabric right sides together, pin, and sew along edges.  Leave an 2" opening on one end. Turn pillow right side out. Fill pillow with 2 1/2 cups of the rice mixture. I made compartments to hold the rice mixture in place so that it will not fall to one end of the pillow. To do this, measure 11 inches from the filled end and sew a straight seam across pillow. Fill again with 3 cups of the rice mixture. Sew another seam 11 inches past the last seam sewn. Fill the rest of the pillow with 2 1/2 cups more of the rice mixture.
Sew the open end shut. I added extra seams for reinforcement to prevent the rice mixture from escaping.



To use the pillow, heat for 2 minutes in the microwave. Enjoy!

Decorating Easter Eggs- Confetti Eggs

We decorated our Easter Eggs different this year. We made Confetti Eggs.

Cascarones or confetti eggs are festive, hollow egg shells, filled with confetti. The word cascaron comes from the Spanish word "cascara," meaning egg shell. The colorful egg is crushed in the hand over the recipient's head showering him or her with confetti. This tradition is most often carried out among friends and family. Cascarones derive from Mexico. They are used in many different occasions but mostly at Easter.

First Remove the inside of the egg by tapping a butter knife on the small end of the egg and then peel off about a nickel sized hole in the egg and dump everything out. Next, clean the egg well with hot soapy water and dry and let dry overnight in an empty egg carton.

To decorate. I used a mixture of metallic paints- acrylic and spray paint. I sprayed all the eggs at once. After the paint dried, I added details like flowers and other designs with glitter paint pens and " Stickles".

Once the paint was dry, I added about a 2 teaspoons of confetti to the inside of the egg and then sealed the egg shut by gluing a 2 inch square of tissue paper to the egg.

These were so fun to make and turned out almost too beautiful to break. The boys are very anxious to smash them.
